Listers: Following my questions about how to adjust Strombergs on a 70 TR6,
because the car was dropping a cylinder at idle, there was some confusion on
whether these carbs were adjustable in the usual manner, etc. One school says,
yes, one says not, without taking the vacumn chamber apart and adjusting using
a
paper clip and a straight edge.
Well, I replaced plugs, condenser, points and plug wires yesterday to try and
eliminate the electrical, and.....no change. So I removed the air cleaner and
eyeballed the carbs, which looked a little dirty. I placed a hand over the
front carb and starved it for air and it smoothed out quite a bit. Finally, I
attempted to used the adjustment tool that I bought at VB and THE CARB WOULD
NOT
ADJUST. No place for the allen wrench to get hold of down there. So, these
carbs do not adjust. (easily)
Looks like (gulp) cleaning and possible replacement of diaphram, or (GULP!)
leak
in the intake manifold again. Maybe I'll just take it to the local $60 an hour
man, and forgo Christmas this year...damn. One note, there is a "fine idle
adjustment on the side of the carbs, a good sized flat screwdrive knob with a
spring on it, but advancement or retard of this changed nothing. Maybe
Triumph
decided to have Stromberg put this on the carb just to give the tinkerers
something that they can move around to make them think they've done something.
Thanks to the listers for the help so far. I am still open to opinion,
however.
