I am slowly getting to the same conclussion with my plug!  Not sure I
understand 
your temporary fix? I'd have to remove the dash support, remove the
carpet and
under padding over the tunnel, remove the tunnel, remove the top of the
tranny
cover, and then pour in oil to plug height or possible drain (this plug
is fine)
the oil and fill up per capacity (2.9 pints I think without checking
manual)!
