Mike,
First, with the engine idling, measure the voltage at the battery 
terminals. There should be about 13.5 - 14V. If that's OK, the 
alternator's charging the battery.
Take the alternator out, remove the rear cover and check all three of 
the solder connections on the diode pack. I've found that a loose solder 
joint will cause the problem you describe. Even if they look right, take 
a soldering gun, remelt and maybe add a little solder to the joint, just 
to make sure.
