I'd have to know the overall length to be sure, but I'll bet it's either a
Herald or a Vitesse (Sports 6) bonnet finisher. They do pretty much fit
the Spitfire bonnet contours, both Spitfire and Herald having that same
raised area in the center of the bonnet.

I'd guess that someone long ago noticed this and decided to add a "custom"
touch to their Spitfire.  Originally it would have been held onto the
Herald by clips riveted(?) to the bonnet top.

My suggestion: leave it there if you like it. It's somewhat appropriate,
if not "Concours" correct! :-)
