hi all,
just a tip for those of you who might be new to driving cars without syncro
 first.
if you put the car in neutral at the lights and let your foot off the clutch
like you should (takes the thrust off the crank and the pressure off the
hydraulics), you will find the box will always crunch when you put it in first
again. this is because the engine has spun the input and lay shafts up to
speed and the first gear cog hits a moving target. if you push the clutch
pedal and then move the stick toward fourth gear, the fourth gear syncro ring
will smoothly stop the input shaft and first gear will engage quietly and keep
 most of its metal attatched.
