Hi,
Your grinding can be one of the following:
1. bad synchro in 2nd. you have to take the gearbox apart to fix this.
2. bad top-hat bushing. you have to take the gearbox down to fix this.
3. the main shaft is ruined in relation to 2 above. This is obviously a
tear-down issue.
You can keep driving it as-is, but the longer you drive on it, the more
$$$ it'll cost to fix! Drain the fluid and look for:
1. clean - no probs, keep driving. This is unlikely if you're grinding gears.
2. golden metallic look - synchros or thrust washers going bad. Get out
the Mastercard and call Charles Runyan.
3. grey-ish look - oh-oh. This is gears or the layshaft or the mainshaft
or the bearings. Get out the Gold Mastercard....
Good luck!
This is a good reason to have a working spare TRansmission around! With
one of those, you install it and fix the bad one when you have time.
See ya,
rml
