My TR-6 did the same thing due to a loose connection inside the
alternator.  I could wiggle the plug on the alternator to make it go
off.  I drove it in that condition for about 7,000 miles, it didn't seem
to be a problem.  The internal voltage regulator eventually went, but I
don't know if it was in any way related.
