Eric, the number of splines is not a problem if one goes from an early
non-synchro gearbox to a Mk.IV Spitfire three-rail gearbox. It is only the
later single-rail "Marina" gearboxes that have a different number of
splines. More grief comes from the larger output flange on all of the
all-synchro gearboxes; that flange must, of course, mate with the
appropriately larger flange on the front of the driveshaft.
