The question was, are the pads on the TR6 rear springs needed?

Why are these necessary? Seems to me that they are there to prevent
the springs from squeaking. Why can't Gary use some heavy grease
on the springs and go with that? I'm not advocating he do this,
I'm just curious as to the reason why he can't. Has anyone not
used the pads without mishap?
