TR6 Starter Problems

Dear List, advice for the following is needed:

This weekend my TR6 experienced starter troubles.  The starter motor 
turns, but the engine does not.  Before this happened, the starter 
made a lot of loud, grindy sounds while turning the engine.  Got 
progressively worse until it no longer turns the motor.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

PS. When getting a push-start, remember to turn the ignition on.
