My own personal opionion the shims are more positive, but the crush type has
the advantage of applying a more consistent pre-load as the bearing wears,
where as the shim's won't.
I prefer the shims myself even though it's much more time consuming to set up.

Yeah, I don't use those crappy phenolic shims, and I always wondered why
they didn't make the sphericlal washers one or two sizes and adjust end play
with the flat, easier/cheaper to make different thickness trust washers ! !
! Your moving one set of gears in or out, the result is the same -
