Advice On Trailering A Spitfire

I think I have finally found the Spitfire I want in CA and would prefer to
trailer (rather than drive) it to NM.  The trailer I have access to is open.
How do I protect the front of the car from rock damage from the rear tires
of the pickup?  I have a heavy tarp, but I'm afraid of what it would do to
the paint because of the wind.
