Hammer Time

Who can tell me the best way to hit a propeller shaft u-joint (ı74 Spit) to 
extract the bearing cups?  Iıve done it before on a drive shaft u-j, but the 
time I spent convinces me there must be a better way.  Do you strike the flange 
itself, or on the outside of the cup?

Also, does it make any sense to paint the propeller shaft?  Iım thinking of 
priming it (but not the joints!) before putting it back in to delay the effects 
of Old Man Rust.
