Sounds to me like a voltage control box problem.  If the voltage cut-out
relay is out of adjustment, it will just keep making higher voltage
comensurate with RPM.  Not good on bulbs, batteries, radios, or anything else
in your car.  You really don't want to be cranking out over 16-17 volts.  Put
a meter on it and measure it at high rpm.  Let me know what you find.

I went through the procedure per the Autopress book for the 59 Sprite and
adjusted all the control box relays.  Got it all to work right.  A little
tedious, but effective in the end.
