I had similar problems with my TR3A steering box. I even tried the
grease route. That worked for a while, but then the grease became
gummy, and did not continually lubricate all the nessary components,
i.e. bearing and seals. The steering oil leak was caused by a bad seal
at the bottom of the box where the control arm goes through. This is a
pain in the *** to replace with the body on the frame, but it will solve
your problems, and is a relatively inexpensive part.
I also have an inoperative TR3A control head assembly and steering wheel
which I replaced a MotoLita Wheel and head assy that Moss sells. I might
be willing to part with any or all of this if it will work on a TR3 (I
don't know if there was any difference). The control head has been
packed away in that infamous "extra parts that I don't want to throw
away" box in the back corner of my garage for some time, so I'll have to
get it out to make sure it is usabel. Last I remember, the horn button
was fine, but the left side of the control head was chipped, and the
turn signal switch was broken. I'm on my way out to the garage in a few
minutes anyway to replace that leaking engine rear seal, so I'll check
for the control head while I'm there.
