I pulled the transmission from my '72 GT6 last week and ordered a new lip
seal for the bell housing to keep the transmission oil in the transmission.
It seems that when I put be bell housing on the the first time the seal got
damaged and I got a good bit of a spot each time after a hot, high speed
freeway run.
The problem is that you have to put the seal in the bell housing then slid
it over the transmission shaft splines to install the bell houseing on to
the transmission. What I did this time is to put it all to gether then
take it apart to see the condition of the seal. Again bent back, damaged.
I cleared it up and put it back together. Again took it apart to see the
result. Again bent back. Humm. I was using a lot of oil to make
things slide but was not getting good results. Finally I put in the
second seal (purchased as a backup, cheap insurance against waiting). This
time When assembling the bell housing to the transmission I wraped the
transmission spline shaft with a thin sheet of plastic, like from a trash
bag. Oiled up everything and the seal slid much easer over the shaft.
No leaks so far.

Second. I get a loud "Click" from the left rear when when ever changeing
direction with a load. Such as, starting off, stopping, then going in
reverse. If I start off in forward again and again, no click. Only when
changing direction.
I put the car up on blocks, set the brakes and had an other driver change
back in forth from forward to reverse. Click, click, click.
I could not really find the source although it clearly is NOT coming from
the universal joint on the half shaft. It does seem to be comming from
the Rotoflex itself. All six bolt there are tight to spec. The but nut
is also new and tight. The noise did seem to begin last year when I
installed new Rotoflex couplings. The right side is OK.
Again, the noise seems to be coming from the Rotoflex itself as if it were
one of these spring metal toys. The kind when you bend them, set them on a
table, wait a second, and Click, they jump into the air. My car does not
jump into the air but the noise has me concerned as it is much louder than
the toy.
