Joe,
Before you cut the center support, consider the cost of replacing it.
~$300 now. You can probably find one in a junk yard that has already
been buggered up, or you can put the radio someplace else. I put mine
in the glove box. I left the old AM unit in the center support. This
helps in competition as well as would be thieves are not attracted to
the old radio.
