Sounds like an auto-choke problem to me.  Did you check this when you
re-built the carb?  The bi-metal spring might be suspect.  I would also
check the plumbing to the heat mass is correct and not obstructed.
Does the heat mass get hot when the engine warms up.  It should
quickly get too hotto touch <ouch>.  A 180deg F thermostat
should be used in a car with the auto-choke setup.
