Yeah, that would work. And yes, the various manuals should give 
diameters and other spec's. Note, too, that the bearing shells and (in 
some, but not all, cases) pistons should be marked with both part number 
and size.

BTW, sounds like your diagnosis is correct. That's exactly what happened 
to Rik's and my Spitfire 4 racecar motor, and that engine is in the 
process of getting the exact treatment you outlined.
