I wanted to pick the collective brain to confirm/deny an appropriate
diagnosis and solution to what seems to be a fuel delivery malady
of my Spit (sorry... this is kindof lengthly and probably an intuitively
obvious thing to those who are not mechanically "challenged").
Symptoms: After sitting for a while and upon starting, the motor needs
to turn alot before it'll actually fire (2 to 3 tries - each with 5 second
durations). When the motor first settles down after being at driving
RPMs, it idles fine. Give it 10 seconds and it'll idle rough and will sputter
on throttle. Restarts on the same outing are not a problem.
I believe the ignition to be fine and the valve lash is set. The electric
choke on the Weber is the only thing in need of adjustment recently
on the carb. Would a failing fuel pump cause the symptoms or
would the carb be suspect?
If the pump is going, I would like to consider replacing mechanical
with electric and am not aware of any reasons not to with respect to
performance or reliability. But: what type pump is recommended,
how concerned do I get about flow rates, would it be better to push
from the boot or pull from the engine compartment, would some
sort of flow or pressure regulator be needed, and would the circuit
(not sure which one yet) need only a change in amp rating for the
fuse to protect the pump? (whew)
I've seen pumps in the catalogs from standard suppliers... and
remember seeing a blank-plate to cover the hole that's left but
can't reference it now. Any ideas? Currently I don't have the equipment
to fashion one from scrap aluminium/aluminum.... metal.
Thanks for any suggestions. I'm looking forward to driving it on
a regular basis again now that the S.E. hot/humid summer is
