Michael,

I haven't carried out the swap you want to, but I've owned a MkII and a
MkIII and I've dropped a 1500 engine into a 13/60 Herald, so from that
background I'll tell you what I know.

(1) The 1500 should drop straight in. Same block, so same engine
mounts. If you get a 1500 exhaust, you should be OK. My MkII had a
4-2-1 manifold (can't speak for US models), and the head is 6-port, so
you can't use a MkII manifold or exhaust with the 1500.

(2) I believe the older MkII gearbox is the same construction as the
13/60 Herald (could be wrong here). If that is the case, you'll have
the same problem that I did with the 1500->Herald. You can't use the
1500 clutch because it has the wrong number of splines for the gearbox
and you can't use the correct clutch for the gearbox because it won't
mate with the flywheel. What I needed was a clutch for a 1500 rear
wheel drive saloon, I can get the part number if you need it.
Triumphtune list it I believe for the sort of swap you want to do, but
I got it much cheaper from a dealer.

(3) Can't say about the diff, except that the Herald is undergeared now
because the 1500TC has so much more torque that the 1300SC. Still
drivable though. Nothing chewed yet, four years down the line.

(4) Don't think there's anything else. I had the same intentions to
rebuild the original engine. But as yet it languishes at the end of
the garden. Good luck (especially on convincing yourself to go back to
less power and put the 1100 back in!). Next will probably be an
overdrive gearbox that I have from a 1500 saloon. So much for
originallity!

Ian
