Fellow Triumph Fiends,
Last night I put the rear main seal housing back on the block of my '72
Spit engine. I perused my Bentley beforehand to see if there were any
tips of importance and found none that I did not know already. Anyway,
after torquing the housing bolts down and cleaning up before heading
inside, I glanced at an old Chilton's that was open on my workbench.
They described a procedure for centering the seal on the crankshaft
end. They suggested using a centering sleeve which I do not have of
course. In lieu of a sleeve, they suggested that the bolts be
tightened slowly while inserting a 0.003" feeler gage between the crank
and the seal to ensure that the seal is centered on the crank. Has
anyone done this installation before? Is this centering process
required? I find it odd that my Bentley manual makes no mention of
it. I have no desire to pull off the seal housing and clean off the
gasket sealer but if it means no (or fewer) oil leaks, I will do it.
Any thoughts?
