Steve,
Forgot to mention, besides being in primer the sides of the boot were 
covered with a "fiberboard" panel.  At the front face of the suspension 
cross-member was in black Terry Horler's book "Original Sprites and 
Midgets" (mine is 1994 edition page 47) states those black parts were 
"flashed over in black", which I interpret as a light coat with no 
masking off and just enough to cover the body color.
