Daniel,
The gears of the starter may be pre-engaged, but the massive jolt of current=
required to make the motor run has to go through a switch. The solenoid is=
actually a switch with huge contacts. Don't eliminate it or the current lo=
ad required to make the starter motor turn will be going through the tiny li=
ttle contacts in the starter switch. You'll be replacing starter switches o=
ften.
That said, the solenoid should work in any orientation. :-)
