How far should a new throw-out bearing last in around-town driving, not abused?

Mine was really short when new, and is now nearly gone at 6000 miles.  I was 
hoping that rebleeding the  line would help, but it did not.  

I also wondered if a 2.5" instead of 3" rod might have been put in by the DPO.  
Would a rod that short even work on a rib-case?
