They are the detents for the shifting rods. They "lock" the shifting
rods in position as you shift gears and they also prevent you from
trying to move two shifting forks at a time. When you move the
shifter into a gear you can feel them push into the depression of the
shifting rods. They are rods ( beans ) and a ball or there are 3 or 4
balls. Worked on too many transmissions to remember which takes which
without my books.
