Ok, I've been doing this for a long time (bought the Midget in 82) and have
only had one broken axle. I do not understand the part where you remove the
opposite side and drift the little piece out. Aren't the spider gears and
stuff in the way? While trying to follow these instructions I destroyed a
center pumpkin. You definitely DON'T want to stick a long drift in from the
opposite side and bang on it with a hammer. I have to be missing something
here.

Since you weren't racing it, I'd bet that the passenger side broke at
the diff. Jack that side up enough that the gear oil doesn't run out
when you pull the axle. Undo the wheel and remove. Take the set
screw(s) out of the drum and remove it. POZIdrive!!! Check for a set
screw on the axle flange, remove if present... Pull the axle out and
inspect for damage. If the spline is still in the gear housing, take
the other axle out and push it out with a drift. The magnet thing if
good too!
