A garage fire in Polk County destroyed three classic cars worth about
$30,000.
A garage about 100 feet from John Mack's home in the 16100 block of
Ellendale Road caught fire Thursday, said Sean Condon, Dallas Fire
Department spokesman. No one was injured, but the blaze, which Mack called
in at 1:43 p.m., charred a 1959 Berkeley (only 666 were made), a 1962 Morris
Mini and a 1972 Honda Z600.
The cars were worth about $5,000 more than the 24-by-24 foot structure in
which they were stored, Condon said.
A cable with an exposed wire that was attached to a battery in the Morris
somehow caused a spark, igniting the car, Condon said. The glass melted
rather than shattered, which was unusual, then the fire spread to the
fiberglass body of the Berkeley, which fueled the flames.
Dallas and Falls City fire departments responded with 22 firefighters, three
engines and three water trucks.
It took about 30 minutes to extinguish the fire.
