I've pulled them by hand, in my younger days. It helps to have someone on the outside to hand it off to. I wouldn't use just any 2X4 joist for a hoist, though. My rule for Harbor Freight stuff is divide by two. If is says 1 ton, then I consider it 1/2 ton.
