Have you bench tested the starter - stick on a bench and connect it with a
couple of jumper cables from the car battery? You might need an assistant
to hold the starter.

Lucas starter or some other problem.
Sounds heat related, might be the starter, or wiring breaking down
somewhere.
Maybe if you pull your original starter, and give it a good cleaning, might
help.
