The inline six is the only engine arrangement that is perfectly balanced.
They don't need harmonic balancers to cancel out rocking motion like V
arrangements and large inline 4 cylinder engines.  
This smoothness is often attributed to their longevity.

It's a shame they don't put them in cars anymore.  
Unless BMW is still making them.
