I am posting this, because of a comment not long ago, about hating the SU's.
The 68 was needing LOTS of choke, for about 5 miles or so, before it would
run without it. It was also gutless on acceleration at all times, and would
lose speed on hills with any significant incline. I had not touched the
carbs since getting them back from Joe Curto, and tuning them out prior to
LotO back in '08. Two years without having to touch them is great, in my
opinion.
So I decide it is time to set them again. I pulled the rocker cover. I
needed to replace the gasket, and I was glad I had put my spare one over an
old rocker cover out in the parts shed. I didn't have to fight with an
"hourglass" shaped gasket, like they look fresh out of the package. My
rockers were a bit loose, but nothing to serious. I went to remove the air
cleaners, and that is when I found the REAL problem. While loosening the air
cleaner bolts, the entire carb assembly was moving. I pulled the covers,
carbs, and heat shield. The brass nuts holding the intake/exhaust were
loose. One so loose, I was fortunate I didn't lose it while driving.
There is a Texas Turd Floater rushing in, so I just tightened the nuts, and
put it all back together again. Now the car will idle cold, without choke.
I have not taken it for a spin, as I found that my throttle cable was 4
strands from breaking. I have the cable out, and will take it to the bike
shop tomorrow. I want to see if I can get a high quality cable, and a
colored sheath that is Teflon (or something similar) lined, to hopefully
give me a longer life on my accelerator cable.

SO, the reason for the post is, if you are having trouble, DO NOT just blame
the SU's right off the bat. There are so many things that can go awry on
these little cars, look at ALL the possibilities, before settling on the
blame.
I forget who it was that was hating their SU's. If you will email me
off-list, I would be glad to walk you through your setting them. If you have
a bluetooth headset, it would be easier on you. This isn't rocket science,
it's more like repetition. I tuned the 65's carbs yesterday in about 15 - 20
minutes, and it idles SWEET. Don't give up, just ask for some help.
