Peter,
Pretty easy to do. Air chisel the welch plugs out of a wire wheel axle and
press the axle inwards to match the length of the disc wheel axle (5/8" if
IIRC). Fit a new welch plug (or an appropriate size rubber ball with sealant)
to keep the gear oil from leaking onto your brake shoes and you're good.

What are the pitfalls when converting the rear axle from disc to wire wheels
whilst keeping the disc wheel housing?
Aren't the axles for the wires slightly longer resulting in the standing off
the hub a touch?
If so, what remedies have worked?
