For what it's worth... (about 3cents!)

Take off the wheel.
Bearing play will be an obvious movement between the axle stub and 
the brake drum
Kingpin play can be observed by looking at the movement of the upper 
part of the swivel axle relative to the upper A-frame (usually!).
Also check for Fulcrumpin movement in the lower A-frame..
