I have seen it with my son in laws Nissan that had the bum 2.4 engine where the cats were placed too close to the heads. Overheating got the best of it by 100k miles. No smoke from the exhaust, although he was burning a LOT of oil. I was told that the computer changes the mixture after reading the oil in the cylinders, hence why there was no smoke?
