I like that calling the shocks "magic boxes" That is the perfect term
for those things.
And they will mess up your front end and make the car bounce all over
the place if they (or 1) is bad.
Do the bounce test, push down on both front fenders at the same time,
the car should be hard to move but it should still go down and snap
right back with no more movement. If one side bounces or if both side
bounce, it's shock time.
Peter C on this list is the man for quality rebuilt shocks. Peter

And if you put new shocks on, please get the upper trunion bushings
(shock arm knuckle) along with the shocks.
I bet it makes a world of difference.
As for over heating, most of these engines have a build up inside of
them. there is a block drain at the back side of the engine under the
carbs/exhaust manifold. Some engines had a brass tap, just turn the tap
and water should come out.
Later engines replaced the brass tap with a plug, I think it's a 5/8
wrench that fits it. Remove that plug and water should come out.
Usually it is blocked with 30-50 years of sludge. Run a stiff wire in
the hole to loosen the sludge, remove the thermostat cover and flush it
out with water. Clean water should come out of the block drain under the
carbs.
If you have the tap, unscrew it as it will surely be plugged up inside.
