Mark,
The upper trunion should sit on a shoulder at the top of the kingpin.
Adjusting the locknut will have no effect on the thrust washer. The shims
sit on this shoulder to provide the correct clearance. Adding shims gives it
more clearance.
For the PO to put the upper fulcrum in backwards he must have omitted the
pinch bolt on the shock arm as it will not go in unless the slot in the pin
lines up correctly. Assuming og course he did not beat the crap out of it to
make it go in.
Thanks
Duncan

Subject: [Spridgets] Spridget King Pins
A week or two ago someone was talking about the nut on the top of the
kingpin causing the upper trunion to lock the swivel. I took my front end
apart today to replace the lower A arm rubber bushings and have the A arm on
my bench. I am sure I have replacement kingpins and have run into the same
issue. They way they are made there is no way to shim up the upper trunion
so that it won't lock down the upper trunion swivel. It looks like the
threaded part of the king pin is threaded down too far so that no amount of
shims could possibly fix it. It was supplied with a nyloc so I am assuming
that the procedure would be to just crank it down snug. I think I will
drill the top of the kingpin and use a castle nut set just so there is not
up/down play and put a cotter pin in it or maybe use a nut and a lock nut.
The latter may be a better idea as it could be adjusted as the thrust washer
wears. Am I missing something?
The PO of my car had put the lower fulcrum pins in backwards which allowed
them to move around. I drove the car 400 miles last weekend with them that
way and didn't notice until I got home. Lucky I didn't have a bigger
problem but the car ran great at 70! Also glad I had a spare set of fulcrum
pins as the old metal sleeve had seized solid to the pins. I am about to
put it back together and will put some anti seize on the pins.
