Hi!
As you said David, when the ignition is on I have 12vdc between - post of
battery and + side of the coil. When i turn the key the voltage drops
significantly.
Another element that might be important: with the ignition on, when i
connect the two hotspots of the solenoid with a screwdriver, the engine
fires up normally.

voltmeter> from the + side of the coil to ground (NOT the - side of the
coil). You> should see 12vdc when the ignition is on. Have your AA crank
the engine> over> and see whether the voltage at the coil drops. If it
does, let us know and> we can give you more things to check.>> Your car
does NOT (or should not) have a ballast resistor. Only the> 1978-1979
Midgets should have ballast resistors. Either solenoid will work> fine
