Nope, neither the BE nor the Minor moved an inch; they've been up on
jackstands for quite some time now. And I've been "up on jackstands" for the
past few weeks myself, spending most of my time sitting around the house or
sitting around my office at school or sitting in the waiting room at some sort
of medical office.
Things changed quite a bit toward the end of the week. First, the weather here
today is nothing short of stupendous ... the type that the tourism industry
lusts after. Talk about changing your mood for the better.
Second, the medics have dialed in a better treatment plan that allows for much
more mobility. Granted, this means that I am now taking legally substances
that my peers used to seek illegally back in the 60's and 70's, but who's to
argue ... I can move!
Third, I decided HAD to get out of the house and take a drive somewhere,
anywhere. And as blind dumb luck would have it, I took a glance at some ads
before heading out the door. Turns out there was a guy up north of town that
had a Datsun 5-speed for sale. The ad said he wanted $150 for it. So, I headed
up that way, without calling in advance because I wanted to get out of the
house anyway, and found out the transmission actually existed and even came
complete with all the levers and forks. Started talking to the gentleman,
trying not to appear over-eager or anything, and found out it came out of a
running, drivable, but very raggedy car. There's a little play in the input
shaft, but other than that it looks like a decent tranny.
Eventually the guy says, "so how about we call it $125?" To which I replied in
a funny, high-pitched, semi-strangled voice that would usually indicate that
the underwear was bunched up waaaaay too tight (which it wasn't), "okay".
Drove back home along the scenic river route with the transmission on board
and a smile on my face.
