I would start by getting a second opinion from someone truly familiar with
the SU carburetors. As long as they aren't corroded up (probably not, since
the engine runs), worst case, it would need the throttle shafts replaced and
a rebuild kit. Webers are fine carbs, but by the time you have acquired one
and the proper manifold for it and figured out what jets to use, you won't
have the available funds to do the interior work and paint and your wife
will be upset about the amount of money being flushed into the car. All the
carb work that the SUs will need is reasonably easy to do. A pair of rebuild
kits and a can or two of carb cleaner and possibly a new pair of throttle
shafts. I would also recommend a pair of the plain butterfly valves if the
original has the poppet valves.
