Good point Bud but this regular discussion was on the user of taper roller
bearings not the regular ball bearings. Makes some differences.

Haven't been able to join in on this discussion, until now, for a few
minutes (but, hey, I've put plenty of miles on my Spridget in the past
few days).
Anyway, I gotta say, with absolutely now offense meant, that you guys
crack me up. How many days is it gonna take you to figure out that the
engineers that designed that front spindle assembly had already
forgotten more (about engineering) than ANY of you guys are likely to
ever know on the subject. Given the nearly impossible economic
constraints they were working under, they did a fantastic job. AND,
believe me, if they didn't feel that spacer was ABSOLUTELY necessary; it
sure as hell wouldn't have been in there!
So, if you can't get the bloody thing set correctly, with the shims that
are already on there; go out and get some more shims, set it the way the
FACTORY WORKSHOP MANUAL tells you to, and go on your merry way with no
worries about front wheel bearings. It's worked well for me for over
forty years......
The factory workshop manual and the factory special tuning manuals have
an incredible wealth of information in them, which the vast majority of
Spridget (as well as MGA & MGB) owners & "technicians" ALWAYS seems to
overlook. One problem (with the shop manuals) is that the information
is not particularly well placed/organized, and requires some serious
studying in order to glean all of the information.
Enjoy.
