Out of "lurk" mode, to pick a nit or two, here ;)
Pittsburgh had been "cleaned-up" long before the demise of the majority
of the local steel industry, which occurred in the early 80s. The
clean-up started shortly after WW II, and had really made progress by
the end of the 1950s.
To give you some perspective on the size of Pittsburgh's steel industry;
it was recorded that, in 1943 (or was it 1944?), the steel production by
Pittsburgh area steel mills exceeded the total steel production by the
Axis powers (Germany, Italy & Japan), DURING THE ENTIRE WAR! So,
obviously, there was a lot of cleaning-up to do after the war.

    In the '50's it was common for the street lights to be on at noon in
Pittsburgh because of the 'smog'. It was actually steel mill dirt, but
who's
counting.

    It's a completely different city now, clean and with fresh air. All
we had
to do was put 50,000 steel workers out of a job and close 80% of the
mills.
