mechanical tach - I need your opinion

I need the tach drive gearbox to hook up the mechanical tach.  Unless I can
find a working used one cheap, a new one from Mo$$ will cost $80 plus
shipping.  I can have the tach converted to electronic for about $100.  The
question is, will the mechanical tach work well enough to justify the
investment, or should I spend a few more buck and upgrade to an electronic
tach?  Thanks.
