Another dumb question

Sorry for asking such dumb questions, but without another bug-eye around to
compare, this list is my best resource.  On which side of the steering
column does the tach belong on a Mk I?  I thought it lived on the left side
of the steering column (LHD), but the tach cable seems too short to reach
that location.  The cable is plenty long enough if I put it on the right
side.  Thanks.
