Dieseling, or "Run on" is a result of the presence of a fuel air mix in the
combustion chamber after the spark has been cut off. Typically set off by
something hot in the combustion chamber. Hot spark plug tip, etc.

For some reason, this doesn't affect all engines the same. For some of the
older guys, I'm sure you can remember when your Dad or neighbor punched up
the throttle of his car just as he turned off the key. This sudden rush of
colder air was often enough to cool the hot spots and the engine would shut
down. Old fashioned and primitive, but works amazingly well.

On carburetor engines, I've been aware of various fuel shut off systems in
both American and Japanese cars. The simple one was to have the throttle
arm set on a solenoid, activated when the key was on. that dropped back to
allow the butterfly to close completely, shutting off the fuel air mix when
the ignition was turned off.

But by far the most common is a shut off solenoid in the idle circuit that
cuts off the idle circuit when you turn off the ignition.

Neither of these systems are available on the Spridgets we deal with!!!

So, as a simple solution, try punching the throttle some to get the revs up
then immediately turn off the key or this alternate method, put it in 4th
gear and let out the clutch as the ignition gets turned off. No need to
dump the clutch, just an easy release same time as the key is turned off.

Run on isn't a problem with fuel injected engines as the fuel supply get
turned off. When can we get that on the "A" engined cars?

Later, Paul A
