I think I'll start with David Lieb's suggestion and pull the axles (new
bearings wouldn't hurt 'cause I have no idea what condition the old ones are
in). That will allow me to check for broken half shaft and a look at the pinion
and ring gear on the diff.
If you have a broken axle it is much easier to diagnose than by pulling the
axles... Jack up the back of the car and turn one rear wheel. The wheel on the
other side will turn in the opposite direction. If it doesn't move, you
probably have a broken axle.
