Tranny needle bearings

I am having trouble removing the circular clips from the ends of the laygear to 
get at the needle bearings.  Is there a special tool or trick to remove these?  
These clips are not tapered on the ends like others where a thin bladed 
screwdriver can be worked in behind.  Gary, with a smooth case Bugeye.
