that cold air leak is to let out the
carbon monoxide and crankcase gases 
from that GD draught tube
which build up under the car while stopped at a traffic light
at a light.

That draft will also provide "flow through"
for the "huge amounts" of warm air
emitted from your "super" Sprite heater...
don't know about your legs and the rest
of your bod, but at least it should keep
your left ear from frostbite. :)
