quite a bit of that air DOES go under
the car past (or "through") the Xmission
tunnel, thus carrying heat away from
the engine compartment and Xmission.

You need (methinks) to "insulate" the
cockpit/tunnel/floors from the inside. 

HomoDepot via advice from master
builder Frank Clarici would be the answer
to this.
