I just called the machine shop that did my head and they said that they always
pressure check the head after grinding the valves and that post-grinding
lapping is not necessary. He did say that there was no harm if you are
meticulous about removing the lapping compound after you're done and don't let
the head set for any great length of time afterwards as the freshly lapped
surfaces are more susceptable to corrosion (rust) after the lapping removes
the blueing and oil from the head shop. Looks like a good excuse to start the
new motor on the garage floor pretty soon since the car won't be done for a
few more weeks.
